(WCHD) based in the Highbridge community of the Bronx is a non-profit organization (501)(c)(3) whose mission is to improve the quality of life for New York City youth and their families. WCHD has responded to the community need for quality youth and family programs by increasing services in diverse, low-income neighborhoods by more than 1000 percent, bringing employment and services into high poverty communities, providing unique opportunities for more than 10,000 children by leveraging state, federal, and private dollars to ensure balanced, diversified and sustainable long-term educational, cultural, counseling,recreational and employment services.

IN -SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAM engages participants ages 14 to 21 in job readiness training, counseling, leadership development, supportive services, internships, job shadowing, support services, adult mentoring guidance and counseling, educational support and college prep, career exploration, drug and alcohol counseling and referrals and employment opportunities.
ISY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM This program is designed to provide youth age 14 to 18 with meaningful work experiences based on their areas of career interest.Participants must be registered in the ISY program and successfully complete job readiness training workshops. Participants will also be required to sign a contract with WCHD and the host agency they will be assigned to work for agreeing to the terms and conditions of the program. In addition to the requirements above participants must volunteer for two weeks at their assigned agency. The purpose of the mandatory volunteering is to demonstrate youth commitment to the program and help participants to get better acquainted with the assigned agencies they choose. Youth participants will have an opportunity to determine if their site and assignment is best suited for them during the first two weeks in the program. The internship will last for the duration of eight weeks. Internship participants earn a stipend for their participation in the program..
THE SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (SYEP) is a seven week summer youth employment program (SYEP) that provides participants age 14 to 24 with employment and educational experiences. Participants are able to acquire valuable experiences in various areas of their career interests during the seven week program. Participants are required to attend weekly mandatory educational workshops that address the following employment areas; workplace readiness, financial literacy, health education, career and higher education exploration. WCHD is currently collaborating with over 100 work sponsors who during the seven week program provides employment opportunities and meaningful job experiences to SYEP participates in the following major career areas; health and human services, business, education, customer service and environmental protection.
The SONYC PROGRAM operates Monday to Friday 3 PM to 6 PM and provides the following services; homework help, tutoring, educational and STEM workshops, computer skills, drama, dance, arts and crafts, recreation and cultural teams and game room. SONYC is a middle-school program that also operates full time for 7 weeks during the summer months.
The COMPASS NYC PROGRAM operates Monday to Friday 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM and provides the following services; homework help, literacy enrichment and STEM workshops, computer skills training, drama, dance, arts and crafts, African drum, guitar, keyboarding, recreation and cultural teams and game room. COMPASS also operates a 50 hour weekly summer program for 7 weeks during the summer months.
The CULTURAL AFTER SCHOOL ADVENTURES PROGRAM (CASA) operates between the hours of 3 PM and 6 PM on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and provides the following services; individual and peer counseling, group counseling, leadership training, cultural teams, job readiness skills training and internships. The CASA Youth Leadership Team organizes and coordinates an annual youth lead talent show at the end of each school year.
THE COUNCILMATIC AND DISCRETIONARY GRANT PROGRAM offers educational and cultural activities such as cultural dance, drama, field and bus trips to cultural events and sites. This program operates Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3 PM to 6 PM.
THE WORK LEARN & GROW (WLG) EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM IS A NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL-FUNDED INITIATIVE DESIGNED TO BUILD OFF OF THE EXPERIENCES GAINED IN SYEP. WLG PROVIDE SYEP PARTICIPANTS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 16-21 AND ARE CURRENTLY IN SCHOOL WITH CAREER READINESS TRAINING AND PAID EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN A VARIETY OF ENTRY-LEVEL JOBS.
WCHD, INC HAS PARTNERED WITH THE NYC ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) REGION 2, PARTNERSHIP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION (PETE) AND BRONX COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO PROVIDE A YOUTH-AND-THE-ENVIRONMENT (Y&E) SUMMER PROGRAM.
Y&E IS A NATIONAL TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM AIMED AT INTRODUCING ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED URBAN AND RURAL YOUTH (AGES 15-18) TO CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD, BY COMBINING SUMMER EMPLOYMENT WITH EDUCATION, TRAINING AND HANDS ON EXPERIENCE.
EVERY SUMMER SINCE 2000, WCHD HAS PROVIDED YOUTH WITH SUMMER JOBS THAT LEAD TO CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ENVIRONMENT AT 3 EPA SITES IN NYC; WARDS ISLAND, NORTH RIVER, AND ARTHUR AVENUE. AS A RESULT OF WCHD AND ITS PARTNERS SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM MODEL IN EXCELLENCE IN PROVIDING EFFECTIVE YOUTH EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, THE NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION, (PETE) HAS DESIGNED A NATIONAL YOUTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES, USING WCHD, INC AS IT’S MODEL FOR OTHER PROGRAMS.
